Letters To Guy

EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE A MESSAGE BOARD HERE AT THE WEBSITE, MANY LETTERS COME INTO GUY VIA EMAIL.
Here are some of those. I just want everyone to know, that I truly am grateful for every letter I receive, and for all the cards, well wishes, instant messages, and all those countless ways you let me know how much what I do means to you. Sometimes, for many reasons, schedule, computer glitch, life...I don't get to answer each note, though I really try to. PLEASE know how much your support and caring means to me and my art career. I never take you for granted. I never will. I hope that comes through loud and clear. See You in The Funny Papers. Happy Trails. God bless you. GUY

Hey Guy,

I am in England to attend my daughters University graduation. She had noticed when we became friends on facebook and had asked me to bring her this book from her bookshelf at home. Upon our arrival, when I gave it to her, I mentioned that I should have tried to get you to autograph it before I brought it over. She told me to look inside ,,, and it was autographed already. I could not remember if you gave her this book or if we had brought it from home on the day you spent at Sun Studio cafe. She remembers it as a gift from you !! Hence this note.
Betty and I have always given credit to our friends and family when folks brag on our children. This week we are especially proud of Sally as she is the valedictorian of her class. Upon re-reading some of your poems and stories, I just wanted to write and thank you for the influence you have had on her life. She has grown up to be a positive person who believes in God and will be successful in whatever she chooses to try. She has thrived here in England and is on track to cross her "career" goal off the list she has been making/keeping for years. While I can't give you sole credit, I can certainly thank you for the influence you have been. I am confident that many other parents could write a similar letter to you even if they have never met you. So I guess what I am trying to say, (besides thanks), is ~ you make this world a better place. Your humility seems to keep you from having the "Big" ego. So, I wanted to encourage you to keep on keeping on. If you have a time when you seem to be struggling, take a deep breath, then try to remember this letter.

Because, I am writing on behalf of all the parents and people who have yet to write and thank you for the creative way you help people every day. You are a blessing to many folks.

M. B.

Dear Guy,
On behalf of the Naramake PTO, I want to thank you for your recent visit to our school. Your enthusiasm and message were important to all, especially those that may be in danger of steering off course in their lives.
The children were enthralled with your enthusiasm and quick drawing techniques. It was so fun to watch their high energy levels as they practiced along with you! Overall, the students learned the importance of finding something they are passionate about and embracing it whole-heartedly! And even if they made a mistake(and got smarter!), they all had fun while they were learning! The book signing was also a terrific opportunity for the students to take home a precious memory of the event as well. You know you make a difference with our children and our school..., as we keep inviting you back again and again!
Best Regards,

These next couple notes came in from my THANKSGIVING POEM for 2009....

Dear Guy: Thank you once again for remembering the importance of love and thankfulness. There are so many this Thanksgiving who will have little to no food (my church will feed aprox. 300)to eat on this day. May your readers give of their time on this special day to make sure that ALL CHILDREN have a hot meal to eat. Mary B.

I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your Nancy cartoon today that I was reading in the Sunday Atlanta Journal and Constitution. My mother just finished a tough two month round of radiation for cancer of the neck. She just discovered another cancerous tumor on her face. She will get more information from her doctor tomorrow about what comes next...but I want to thank you for providing encouragement for me. She lives in another state, and I will get another Nancy cartoon for her to keep.

God Bless You!

Sally

Hey Guy.....I just saw you on channel 4 news and couldn't resist looking for you on here...I just wanted to say "Thanks" for choosing Boys Town as your gift recipient...I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska..finally moving away almost 8 yrs ago. I know Boys Town very well..spent lots of time there. They used to have a dairy farm there where u could visit and learn about the process of 'gettin milk' lol..it was the first time as a child I ever actually pet a cow..hahaa..and as I grew older, I hung out with friends who lived there so I spent much time there with them, including watching their football games. I grew up not very far 'down the road' from there.

Boys Town is such a beautiful place with such a profound impact on all who are blessed to experience it. So many troubled youth have grown up there and had they not, may have followed a lessor path in life but thanks to the commitment of Boys Town, these youth are given the opportunity to know the right path. They are shown firsthand that they truly matter in society and that we all have the power to be whoever and whatever we choose, no matter where we came from. Anyway..without getting too deep here..lol..I thank you once again..what a beautiful inspiration you are! I did not grow up at Boys Town but am so proud to have experienced it, even in the small ways that i did. What great memories you brought back to me today!

Blessings, Lyn

I guess by now it's already happened, but I just wanted to write and congratulate you on your Christmas CD and the November 18th launch party! I hope things in the music biz continue to go your way.

Guy,

Thank you for sending that to us, it means so much as our son, Dylan, is currently in Iraq. If you were around Simsbury in July you may have seen the article on him in the Yankee Flyer. It was beautifully done by Ann Marie Potter and Luke was in it too!

We wish you well in your new home and we always look forward to the e-mails!

=======================================================================================================Guy,

I have been a fan of Ernie Bushmiller just as long as I can remember. Toward the end of his life, he took Fritzi out, then his comics went to hell, until the Gilchrist Brothers come along and save Nancy. Now the way you use Fritzi for special occasions and special holidays is just amazing. I know that beyond the grave, Ernie is so proud of what you have done.
The artwork in these two Fritzi profiles is the best Fritzi I have seen from you in several years. Especially that black profile in second panel.
Is there anyway I can buy these as art. I loved Ernie and Abby Bushmiller, and I really admire you for carrying on their tradition and intigrity.
You are a class act, Mr. Gilchrist,
Jim S.

You have this magic way of brightening one's day!
It has been a hectic crazy week, rainy and cloudy this morning and I  hear this song.
I always remembered the reason why you placed that little star at the end of your signature.
As it was your way of adding God's name along with yours for everything you did in thanks for all the talent he had bestowed upon you.
After hearing that song I think you won the spiritual lottery for the amount of talent he handed you.

The song is beautiful!

Christmas comes a little earlier every year-this one is special.

Thanks,

Scott

Having had the honor of working on the Nancy comic strip with Guy for a short period of time in 2000, I can honestly say he is the real deal... He's the guy who sets his sights on the sky and usually reaches it... Nothing is beyond his fingertips and he makes everyone around him feel like they can achieve anything they set their mind to do... He's a good person with a big heart... Of course it doesn't hurt that he roots for the Red Sox, also... Best wishes, Guy...

On that drawing you gave me years ago...I noticed that you wrote "God Bless You" above your name. Funny how it stands out now. God is so good and His timing is SO amazing. I'm grateful that He's crossed our paths, then....and again, now. No matter what happens, you have a friend and prayer warrior here in LA.
It would be wonderful to collaborate on something that glorifies His kingdom, '...on earth as it is in Heaven."

Guy believes in people and human nature at it's best. You know Guy as the writer of the featured comic strip, NANCY. That reputation should give you an insight as to the heart of man by the content and drawings of his work. I have seen first hand, his charitable nature. Giving to the less fortunate children not only in his community but in other states, as well. The music community, of which I am a part of, has a friend in Guy Gilchrist. He has given his time and shared his talent raising not only funds, but awareness for many worthwhile projects.

I am the guy that wrote to you in a panic a year or so ago, because I lost my copy of "Night Lights and Pillow Fights" which I wanted to read to an elementary school class on the last day of school. You were so gracious to email copies of the pages of the book so I could still read them. I Have been reading to elementary classes on a weekly basis (sometimes up to 4 classes) since my first son was in first grade, he is now 34. I told the story of loosing my book to some family members, a cousin was so moved that she found a copy on Amazon and sent it to me (without the personal touch of my original of course). I have however since found my copy which I treasure dearly. The cover is quite tattered from the years of carrying it to school, but I now keep it in a very safe place between trips to school, etc.
I would like to purchase copies of your book "A Trip Through Storyland for all four of my children and a few extra copies for gifts to others. I wonder if you would be willing to address the books to them personally? Let me know how to send the information and payment for the books. I noticed that this book is currently selling on Amazon for up to $40.00. I noticed on your order form theree is not a shipping charge indicated. You can't afford to ship at these prices, come on we want you to keep eating and drawing!
I want to wish you all the best in your new endeavors.
Sincerely,
Dave

Dear Mr. Gilchrist,

It was a pleasant surprise to find out you are in Nashville. My wife and I live in Bellevue. Your love of music also explains many of the references in the Nancy strip.

My reason for writing you is to express my thanks for always doing a strip for the holiday at hand. Your Thanksgiving and Christmas ones are always memorable and your 4th of July strips were excellent this year. I will be 60 in September so I come from a generation not far removed from yours. You express the values I hold dear and I just wanted to let you know that it means a great deal to my wife and I. Your strip in yesterdays paper was the only one that paid tribute to the 4th and its meaning.

Thanks for all your have done to promote such special values and freedoms in your Nancy comic strip.

Years ago I was a folk singer in the midwest. Best of luck as you persue your music career. Will try to catch you at a performance in Nashville.

Thanks and God Bless you,

Steve

How are things you big TV star!

Miss you here in Connecticut. I'm really glad to hear that you're settling in nicely in Nashville.

Just wanted to thank you again for how much you taught and cared for our daughter. She loves her Summer 6 week program at RISD. She has met so many talented artists, musicians, and frriends just during her first week there. She's already expresse interest in not coming home every weekend. She is seriously thinking about Med Scool at Brown, so she can take art courses along the way right next store at RISD.

I hope this note brings warmth to your heart in knowing how much you have been a part of  our teenage daughter's  tremendous turnaround during what could have been a real disasterous part of her life. I owe you a debt that cannot be repaid. I hope my personal thanks is enough.

Kiick butt in Nashville!

I am on a wild goose chase this morning...
My daughter (now 19) recalls her favorite book as a younger child. The book was titled "Mud Pie" and was an oversized hard cover children's book. It was a cartoon character type book and I believe the outside was blue in color. I can't remember the theme but I'm guessing it may have been about a pillow fight. I am disappointed that I donated this book along with several other books to goodwill years ago. She and the neighbor boy were visiting and talking about their childhood and both agreed that this was their favorite book that I would read to them every day!
If available, I would be very interesting in obtaining one or two books. I think this would be a very special gift to the two of them!
Thanks and I appreciate your time in looking into this for me.
